There are more well-made movies than good movies. That’s sort of my new mantra. Plenty of people can shoot beautiful films. There are a lot of great editors, a lot great designers. But where is the content? Who are the characters? Is it moving? You want the audience to feel something, and if it’s comedy, you want them to laugh hard, even if it’s at the expense of a better shot or a better edit. There are many times when the editor will say to me, ‘Well, that’s not a real good cut.’ And I’ll say, ‘Yeah, but it’s funny. Let’s Just do it.’

Harold Ramis interview from “And Here’s the Kicker: Conversations with 21 Top Humor Writers on Their Craft”.

This is so ridiculously true, especially the last 4 lines. Those are usually the decisions that drive me nuts but ultimately, you always go with the cut that brings the funny.
