Tonight’s rewatching: Husbands and Wives
Love the editing, cinematography, and structure in this one.
Kidnapping
“I was kidnapped once. I was standing in front of my school yard and a black sedan pulls up. And two guys get out and they say to me, do I want to go away with them to a land where everybody is fairies and elves. And I can have all the comic books I want and chocolate and wax lips. And I said, ‘Yes’. And I got into the car with them. I figured what the hell, I was home that weekend from college anyhow.”
-Woody Allen, Stand Up Comic 1964-1968
Recently re-watched, still a fantastic film (Woody Allen’s involved so how would I feel any different).
I find the Hollywood blacklistings very interesting but have never read up on them in detail, I need to get some books on the topic.
Something else to check out, if you’re interested, is Guilty By Suspicion with De Niro* (I’m an idiot, thanks Annie), another good film about the Hollywood Red Scare.
Woody Allen (Manhattan, 1979) ”Why life is worth living.”
“Well, all right, why is life worth living? That’s a very good question. Well, there are certain things I guess that make it worthwhile. Uh, like what? Okay. Um, for me… oh, I would say… what, Groucho Marx, to name one thing… and Willie Mays, and… the second movement of the Jupiter Symphony, and… Louie Armstrong’s recording of ‘Potatohead Blues’… Swedish movies, naturally… ‘Sentimental Education’ by Flaubert… Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra… those incredible apples and pears by Cezanne… the crabs at Sam Wo’s… Tracy’s face…”
Love this scene.
Really great piece on Woody Allen breaking into comedy writing.

Cartoonist Stuart Hample talks about how he turned his favorite stand up comedian into a comic strip in the 70’s.
Really interesting to hear the process behind this and how Woody helped out on the strip.
Improbable movie trading cards.
I have some “Nightmare on Elm Street” cards that look exactly like this.
